MMWC PROJECT
After years of collaboration among Coachella Water Authority (CWA), the State of California, and Riverside County, the City of Coachella is constructing the Mesquite Mutual Water Company Water Consolidation Project. Throughout this timeframe, the City worked with the State and County to plan, design, and permit the project, as well as secure grants to fund the project. The Mesquite Mutual Water Company (MMWC) is a private water company that serves the Mesquite community located southeast of the Avenue 50 and Jackson Street intersection consisting of 14 parcels comprised of single family and multi-family residential properties with a total of 17 residential water connections. Prior to July 2015, MMWC delivered water to its customers from a private on-site well. This well failed and had been experiencing water quality issues related to Hexavalent Chromium. For these reasons, MMWC could no longer provide an adequate potable water supply to its residents. CWA began providing MMWC an emergency water supply through a fire hydrant meter and 900 feet of fire hose, however, it was not meant to be a long-term water supply. In 2017, the City secured funding for planning and design of the project from the Integrated Regional Water Management Grant Program funded by Proposition 1. Following design, the City began the process of applying for funding to construct the project. The City’s commitment to the Project resulted in a $1.6 million Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) / Safe and Affordable Funding for Equity and Resilience Program (SAFER) grant from the California State Water Resources Control Board to fund construction of the project. The Mesquite Mutual Water Company Water Consolidation Project will consolidate the MMWC with CWA’s public water system and provide a high quality, reliable water supply for the residents of this community. This Project and the associated SAFER funds help to ensure that Californians who currently lack access to safe drinking water receive safe and affordable drinking water as quickly as possible.
