Popular demand extends water conservation-themed scavenger hunt

October 7, 2021

News from: The City of Coachella

Due to popular demand, the Coachella Water Authority & Sanitary District’s Water Conservation Scavenger Hunt has been extended through October 28 due to the overwhelming response by city residents and families.

The family friendly scavenger hunt encourages participants to have some fun while learning about water conservation. A scavenger hunt passbook provides clues to find 20 landmarks throughout the City of Coachella. Each site has a sign with fun water-related facts in English and Spanish and a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone. The code directs participants to a web page with additional conservation tips and a secret word to be entered in the passbook. The secret word verifies participants found the location and allows them to collect prizes.
“While the goal is to teach residents about the importance of water conservation, the scavenger hunt offers much more than first meets the eye,” said Coachella Utilities Manager Cástulo Estrada. “It is also an opportunity to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors.”

Those who use the clues to find all 20 locations will receive prizes to host a picnic for two. The scavenger hunt is designed to allow people to collect prizes in stages instead of waiting until they have visited every site. The first five words can be redeemed for two cups, the second five words can be redeemed for two plates, the following five words qualify for utensils for two, and those who collect all 20 secret words will receive a soft-side mini cooler.

“This is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy and learn some valuable lessons about sustainable water use, which is particularly important now since California is suffering another a drought,” Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez said. “The scavenger hunt also highlights some of the great parks, public art displays, and other landmarks throughout Coachella.”

To join the scavenger hunt, download a passbook by visiting www.ConserveCoachella.com/scavenger or pick up a printed copy at the Coachella Corporate Yard, 53462 Enterprise Way, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or at the Coachella Library, 1500 Sixth Street, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and between noon and 8 p.m. Wednesday. Passbooks can be verified and prizes collected at the Coachella Corporate Yard. Each participant is only eligible to receive one prize for each level completed.

The Coachella Water Authority & Sanitary District Water Conservation Scavenger Hunt began on September 3, 2021, and runs until October 28, 2021, or while supplies last.
