Coachella, CA: Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) applauds today’s historic appointment of Alex Padilla to the United States Senate as California’s first Latino Senator.

I highly commend Governor Newsom for ensuring that his selection was inclusive and reflective of California’s diverse demographics. This appointment honors California’s 15 million Latino residents.”

“I am proud to share this historic moment with my children as our Golden State welcomes our first Latino Senator. Representation matters. Latinos comprise nearly 40% of the state’s population, and as that number continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that our leaders equitably reflect our residents. Alex Padilla is the leader we need fighting to defend our most vulnerable communities and get us all on track for economic recovery. A son of immigrants, Alex’s story is reflective of many of our communities, and his achievements embody our California dream. This milestone is a testament to the generations of immigrants whose contributions have shaped our state’s shared legacy.”

Governor Newsom’s announcement follows the strong advocacy efforts led by the California Latino Legislative Caucus, urging him to honor California’s 15 million Latino residents by appointing a Latina or Latino leader to fill the vacancy.
