News from: Desert Recreation District
The Desert Recreation District (DRD) is proud to announce it has been awarded $148,500 through CalRecycle’s Beverage Container Recycling Grant Program. These funds will be used to purchase and install water refill stations at public parks and community centers across the Coachella Valley, promoting sustainability and supporting California’s goal of an 80% recycling rate for CRV beverage containers.
This exciting initiative will make it easier for residents and visitors to refill their reusable water bottles, reducing single use plastic waste and encouraging environmentally friendly habits. By providing convenient access to clean, filtered water, DRD is taking a meaningful step in preserving the natural beauty of our desert communities while supporting public health.
“We are thrilled to bring this project to life,” said Kevin Kalman, DRD General Manager. “These refill stations are a simple but impactful way to reduce plastic waste and support our parks as places of health, wellness, and environmental stewardship.”
Water refill stations will be installed at the following DRD sites: Indio Community Center Park, Indio Hills Community Center, Thousand Palms Community Center and Park, La Quinta Community Center and Park, Mecca Regional Sports Park, Oasis Del Desierto, North Shore Community Park & Parque del Pueblo in North Shore.
The Beverage Container Recycling Grant Program, administered by CalRecycle, supports projects that increase beverage container recycling and reduce litter in California communities. DRD’s project aligns with the program’s goal of reaching and maintaining an 80% recycling rate for aluminum, glass, plastic, and bi-metal CRV beverage containers.
